What plants to expect in your Nordic starter collection
Dryopteris ethyrosora ‘Brilliance’
Delicate in appearance, but a hardy survivor in nature, The Japanese Shield Fern is a showstopping specimen that provides a lot of seasonal interest all year round.
Luzula nivea
Although it looks like a grass, it isn’t! Rather, it’s a spreading, clump-forming evergreen perennial. It has rich, green leaves, which contrast with pure white summer flowers held on tall stems.
Sanguisorba tanna
Small, plum-coloured, button-like flowers top wiry, upright stems, and seem to hover above the neat mounds of blue-green, pinnate foliage. This cultivar is more tolerant of drier conditions
Echinacea ‘White Swan’
Large daisy-like flowerheads appear on upright, rigid stems for several months from midsummer. Butterflies and later birds will be attracted to them making this perennial a lovely addition.
Geranium ‘Samobar’
Small, deep purple-black flowers appear in late spring to early summer held high above soft green, deeply lobed leaves that have disctinctive purple blotches around the centre. Excellent for suppressing weeds.
Stipa tenuissima
Sometimes known as ‘Angel Hair’, this elegant grass creates dense tufts of soft- looking, fine leaves that billow in the slightest breeze. Providing year round interest, it’s a reliable and durable grass.
Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Album’
Slender spires of white flowers from July to August above whorls of deep green leaves. This elegant perennial has self-supporting flowers making it ideal for adding height to a sunny or partially shady border.
Fragaria vesca
A spreading perennial
strawberry plant with
sharply toothed, bright
green leaves and dark red fruits appearing in summer. Great for birds and for the kitchen!
Tiarella ‘Iron Butterfly’
This Tiarella has large, deeply cut leaves with lime-green edges and a purple-black centre. In late spring delicate spikes of fragrant, soft-white flowers appear on tall stems.
Gaura ‘Karalee White’
A versatile plant of soft, grey-green foliage that contrasts beautifully with its delicate star-shaped, white flowers that flourish through summer and into autumn.
