With explosions of flowers from late-spring through summer to early autumn, ably supported by shrubs to give year-round structure and interest, The Cottage is designed to maximise ‘flower power’ and appeal to all of your senses. A nature-loving design, where modern plant choices blend with the wilder principles of the English cottage garden.

Structure and colour comes from the flowers and berries of Viburnum and delicately spring-blossoming Fuji cherry tree, with year-round colour and interest provided by Hellebores and Tiarellas. The Cottage truly sparkles in the summer with Astrantia, Fuschia, Lupin and Verbena creating symphonies of colour, shape, and height.

The Elements

There are a number of key elements that joyfully combine to create your Cottage garden.

Variety

From structural plants, to light and airy plants, from ever-green plants to plants bursting with colour, The Cottage provides a year-round spectacle, though it does require a little more attention.

Pastels

With flowering plants chosen particularly for their pastel colours, The Cottage will glimmer in the spring and summer, and soften in the Autumn.

Wild

Whilst all our gardens will welcome local wildlife, the flowers, seed heads, berries and shelter make The Cottage a particularly welcoming habitat for nature.

The Inspiration

The Flower Garden, Gravetye Manor by William Robinson

This garden explodes with life. Year-round planting to create year-round movement, vibrancy and life, carefully structured to create a relaxed, lively and living garden of overflowing mixed borders.

The Manor House, Upton Grey

This garden by one of the great English garden designers - Gertrude Jekyll - was an important inspiration for The Cottage. The formality of the manor meets the structured informality of the planting to create a wonderful blend of old and new to create a full and beautiful picture, humming with life.

Thomas Hardy’s Cottage

It would be silly not to mention an actual cottage when talking about our inspiration for The Cottage garden, and where better than the gardens at the cottage of beloved novelist and poet Thomas Hardy. This represents the epitome of cottage gardening.

The Plants

Our designs are created to ensure your garden has real structure, colour and shape, for immediate impact.

It means you’ll receive plants and flowers of all shapes and sizes - from larger, “hero” items for stature and impact, all the way through to smaller “bedding” plants that help fill spaces and bring colour.

Here’s some more detail on the types of plants you can look forward to with The Cottage - delivered right to your door and ready for planting.

1. Centrepiece

A visually interesting, structural shrub such as Rosa ‘Gentle Hermione’ or Prunus Kojo-no-mai forms the design’s centrepiece

2. Shrub

Weighty shrubs such as Choisya and Viburnum add form and substance to the design, ensuring immediate shape

3. Height

Elegant, tall perennials such as Thalictrum and Verbena bonariensis need little space to bring height and impact to the design

4. Statement

Statement plants such as the Salvia 'Caradonna Pink' and delicate but impactful Gaura create flow and movement, with visual stand-out

5. Ground

Ground plants such as Alchemilla mollis and Geranium 'Mavis Simpson' create carpets of colour that fill gaps and provide beautiful scents too

6. Climber

Climbers such as Clematis and Rose help create height, range and coverage against fences and walls

Please note that we create your design based on a range of plants to ensure they best suit your space, aspect and flower bed(s) size - the plants mentioned on this page are representative of the theme but there can be variations!
